LEARNING

Welcome to our 2017 school year. Many of our staff have been back for a while but we gathered on the Monday of last week for a training day on Protective Behaviours based on the right of every child in our school being safe here, at home and wherever else they might be!

It was great to see the students return with such gusto on Wednesday!! I think this says a lot about our orientation and enrolment processes here at SSP. Our classes are full with some vacancies in our early years’ classes.

ENGAGEMENT

Greetings

I would like to extend my special greetings to the families that join us for the first time in 2017 and to our new staff members who, along with current staff, have been working hard in preparation for the school year. I pray that your association with the school will be a rewarding one.

Parents will get an opportunity to meet the staff at our Parent/Teacher Information Meetings scheduled for Weeks 2 and 3 (see the Term Calendar attached to this newsletter) or when we gather at our first whole school Mass which will take place on Thursday 9 February at 9.00am. Our first Assembly will be in Week 4 to announce our House Sports Captains.

It is really great to see parents arriving in plenty of time for children to arrive at the classroom and ready to learn, using our Kiss n Ride program beautifully and observing extreme caution around the car parks and roads leading to our school. Congratulations to everyone on such a great start to the year.

Parent Information Nights 2017

The Parent Information Nights for each class begin at 6.00pm in the classroom and will finish by 7.00pm at the latest. The dates for these meetings are as follows:

Week 2:

Wednesday 10 February: PP, Years 1 and 2 (Fiona Green to coordinate)

Week 3:

Monday 13 February: Kindy; Years 3 and 5 (Shane Baker to coordinate)

Wednesday 15 February: Years 4 and 6 (Kerry Hewitson to coordinate)

These meetings are designed to set up the year for you and your child and contain vital information for all parents. Please note they are not a parent/teacher interview but more an introduction to the year and the chance to set up an appointment for another day should you have any concerns or questions for the class teacher. At least one representative from each family is expected to attend and sign the attendance register. I look forward to seeing you at these meetings.

Save the Date

The Friends of SSP are holding our annual outdoor movie night on Friday 10 March - The Secret Life of Pets. Please refer to the flyer sent home last week for tickets.

Library News

At this time of year we are looking for volunteers to help in the library and also to do book covering at home. Thank you to those wonderful parents who have already volunteered. Book covering at home is a great way for people to help the school who may not otherwise be able to come to the school, either because they work or have young children at home. If you are unsure how to cover books, but would like to have a go, please contact the Library staff on 9301 6814 and we will help you.

Volunteering to help in the library can be at any time that suits you, for either an hour or two, in the morning or afternoon. As a volunteer, you can be taught the Circulation area, receiving books into the library, loaning books via the automated system (if you wish to) and shelving the books. There are many other jobs in the library. So whatever time and help you can give it will be most welcome. These volunteer hours are part of the “Give 10” program running at our school.

If you have not been on our volunteer list, or if you were on it last year and wish to continue this year, please fill in the tear off slip below and send it to the Library before Friday 17 February, or email:

Mrs Leonard at leonard.vicki@cathednet.wa.edu.au or
Mrs Boudewyns at boudewyns.helen@cathednet.wa.edu.au

Thank you from The Library Team

FFA National Futsal Championships 2017

We are very proud of Gio & Fabi, who were successful in trialling for the u10 & u12 travelling teams to Spain & Portugal where they will be competing in the Trillo Cup 2017, followed by games at various Academies across Portugal. They will stay on in Portugal, as they were invited to Porto FC for 2 weeks training and assessment with the Porto Academy teams. Great work boys.

Altar Servers Training and Social Night

With the new school about to begin, we will also be starting the Altar Server training and social evenings again.

The first training & social evening will be on Friday 10 February and will commence at approx. 7.30pm (i.e. immediately after the 7.00pm Mass). It would be great if as many of our Altar Servers could attend the Mass beforehand as well.

This will also be open to all new and aspiring Altar Servers (including those who will be receiving their First Holy Communion later this year). So, if you know of anyone who would like to become an Altar Server, please feel free to invite them along.

Snacks and cool drinks will be provided; so for catering purposes, kindly confirm whether you will be available to attend by Tuesday 7 February.

I look forward to seeing you all again.
