Do Our Teaching Habits Need to Change?
An interesting read for the members of our school community. SSP are well placed with all things considered in this busy time of transformation.
Outdoor Family Movie Night
This coming Friday, 10 March, is our annual family movie night on the oval. This year we are screening The Secret Life of Pets. If you haven’t already purchased your tickets, sales close tomorrow (Thursday 9 March).
Friends of SSP
The Friends of SSP is a representative body through which parents can help the school fulfil its educational responsibilities and to ensure that the spirit of Christian co-operation prevails in the context of the school’s mission and vision.
The Friends of SSP operates as four independent teams that meet according to need. They are:
- KidsMatter Advisory Group
- HOPE Network
- Social & Fundraising Team
- Catering Team
To find out about the plans for 2017 or to join a group, please come to the Sundowner on Wednesday 15 March at 5.30pm on the staffroom deck.
Pre-Primary and Kindy are asking for donations of Easter Eggs and baskets that can be used for our Easter Raffle. Any donations can be taken straight to the Pre-Primary classes or given to your classroom teacher. We thank you for your generosity in supporting this fundraising project which will help to supply reading resources in our Pre Primary and Kindy classrooms.
Raffle tickets have already been sent home with the eldest child. More tickets are available from Pre-Primary. The Easter raffle will be drawn at 2.00pm on Thursday 6 April. Good luck to everyone in the draw.
House Swimming Carnival – Thursday 16 March
Just a reminder that all students in Years 4 - 6 are involved in the annual Swimming Carnival at Arena Joondalup on Thursday 16 March. Details about the carnival were included on the note accompanying the nomination form and an approximate timetable can be accessed by following the link included in this newsletter.
All students from Years 4 - 6 will be going to the pool on the day to take part in the carnival in some way, whether that be by swimming in traditional races, noodle races, or cheering on their team mates. Please note that spectator fees apply if you wish to come along and cheer the swimmers on but it will be money well spent!
If you are able to volunteer to be a parent helper, even if it is only for a short time on the day, please email Mr Thompson on and then meet Mr Thompson at the Arena on carnival day and he will explain your duties.
Unfortunately, this year Arena won’t allow the school to provide the parent helpers with some sandwiches and a drink for lunch, so please come prepared with either your own food or money. Please be reminded that this rule also means there will be no canteen orders from our school on the day and students must bring their own lunch and drink from home.
The students have been reminded that they should not be sharing lollies or food with other students at the carnival because of allergy concerns and that Arena does not allow coloured jelly type lollies, streamers, face paint or hair dye because of the damage they cause to the pool and surrounds.
‘Theory and research suggest that physical elements of a work space can enhance emotional health, interactions, and therapeutic outcomes’.
Creating a space that is calm and fresh so that students feel emotionally safe and one that has a professional feel for parent work has been in the planning for quite a while and has now been completed.
With the first parent workshop being well attended, keep your eye out for more to be scheduled in the future.
Thank you to the lovely volunteers that helped out on Thursday at the sausage sizzle. We could not have done it without you. Trish from the canteen would like to extend her thanks and appreciation to Bakers Delight at Beaumaris for their continued support of our school.
QELi Course for Leaders in Catholic Schools
This week Mr Baker will be in Brisbane attending Phase 1 of this course for school and system leaders across Australia. The course for high performing leaders is in its second year and is by application/selection only. He will join 4 others from WA and twenty others from the Catholic sector Australia wide, taking part in this year long course. The benefits for our school to be a part of this cutting edge course are many, including an international tour of schools in New York and Ontario in May. He will be sharing his insights in the newsletter on this work as the year progresses.
Mr Baker returns to school on Monday next week. He will be disappointed to miss our FSSP Family Movie Night unfortunately, because this is always a great community night. However, other members of the Leadership Team will be attending to say hello in his absence!
Please find attached a copy of Tim McDonald’s letter dated 20 February 2017, regarding the Royal Commission.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Parent/teacher interviews for Pre Primary to Year 6 will take place in Weeks 9 and 10 of this term (except for 3F who have theirs early in Term 2).
These meetings are very important as a means of checking in on your child’s progress at school, so please ensure at least one parent is able to attend. Notes with times are sent home by class teachers.
Music and Performing Arts
This year the Music and Performing Arts program is focussing on strengthening and rebuilding our choir, developing our band, consolidating the instrumental program, nurturing our Music Ministry Mass group, reinvigorating our Creative Dance program and working with our Liturgical Dance Group sharing our faith.
The program occurs on the following days and times;
Wednesday - Music ministry for
Years 2 - 6 in the Music room at lunchtime. Please bring along your lunch
to eat outside the music room.
Wednesday - Creative Dance commencing in Week 7 from 3.00pm to 3.45pm in the Hall for students in Years 4 - 6 only.
Thursday - Choir for Years 4 - 6 only from 8.00am to 9.00am in the music room.
Thursday - Liturgical Dance for Years 4 - 6 during lunchtime, limited numbers of 25 students only.
Thursday - Band from 3.00pm to 4.00pm. By invite only. Students in band last year are current members.
We now have a dedicated absentee line to call to advise when your child will not be attending school for any reason. The number to call is 9301 6809. You will also need to put any reason for absence in writing, which you can do by emailing If you do send an email in, there is no need to call to explain the absence.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Miss Wilma Bortolini and family on the sad loss of her dad.
