Protective Behaviours Program
As outlined at this year’s Parent Forums, and discussed further at the Parent Workshop hosted by our hard working Social Worker Laura Pope, held in Term 2, we are introducing this new program to our school. See below for a testimonial written by a parent who attended the parent workshop -
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the school for organising the Child Protective Behaviours seminar. After attending this seminar I can’t stress to you enough how valuable I found it. The guest speaker (Karen) was amazing, she was engaging, informative and it was clear how passionate she is about keeping our children safe. Karen provided us with simple tools/skills that can be applied easily to our every-day lives in assist in educating our children as to how to be safe in our community and world around us.
I would strongly recommend conducting another seminar this term if possible, as I would love for my husband to have the opportunity to attend also.”
Protective Behaviours is an Internationally acclaimed personal safety and child abuse prevention program endorsed by Catholic Education Western Australia and now mandatory for all Catholic schools to include in their curriculum planning K-6. The program is based on two themes:
- “We all have the right to feel safe at all times” and
- “We can talk with someone about anything, no matter what it is”
The staff at this school have participated in a Protective Behaviours Professional Development training day and will be integrating the Protective Behaviours Program into the curriculum from Kindergarten through to Year 6. These Sessions will be conducted during Health lessons during Terms 3 & 4 each year.

Our whole school focus this term is respect. I spoke about this idea at Assembly last week and the students were completely around it!! This is good news and now we need to keep it up or keep it REAL – Respect, Excellence, Attitude and Love. This was the acronym discussed with our senior classes last term. Discussions at home, modelling at home and praising any respectful behaviour to each other, to siblings and other members of the family would be really appreciated.
Our Pastoral Care program this term has a big focus on respect and we have this proudly displayed now in our Sacred Space here at school.
We have included a link below to access our term calendar. We have a very busy term ahead of us with some key dates for parents to remember:

Ursula Frayne Catholic College 120 Year Celebrations
Are YOU a former student or staff member?
Are you a former student or staff of St Joachim’s, Xavier College, Our Lady Help of Christians, Our Lady of Mercy or Ursula Frayne Catholic College? They are looking for you to join the newly formed Alumni. Let them help you reconnect with your old school and friends. Go to their website below and complete the registration form (under Community) or contact Mary McGonigle on 9470 0925 or to have a form sent to you. In 2019, they will celebrate 120 years since their foundation school was opened and would like to have as many former students and staff join them in celebration.
Some reminder letters went home this week. At this point in the year contributions to the payment of your school fees should have happened. Without the collection of fees some of our programs (and we have many at SSP) just cannot operate and like you we too have some bills to pay!
Should you be experiencing some financial hardship then please contact Alyssa Cantrill or make an appointment to see the Principal. We have a number of different options for parents who are in this boat, so please don’t put it off, make a call today and sort something out.
Your continued support on these matters is greatly appreciated.

On 8 August 2017 is the Feast Day of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, after whom MacKillop House takes its name. Her motto was “Never see a need without doing something about it”.
Toiletries Drive for ShopFront
During the month of August our Year 6 Social Justice Committee are asking all families to donate male and female toiletries to ShopFront. In doing this we are emulating the work of Mary MacKillop. Further information will be announced at our next Assembly. Please send all donations in to class rooms.
Staff PD Day – Spirituality in our School
The staff enjoyed and were challenged with our PD day on Monday 18 July facilitated by Christine Robinson and Professor Chris Hackett from Notre Dame University. The topic of spirituality is a very broad one but we learnt you have to have some exposure to religion to spark spirituality in a person. Again the idea of teachers building relationships with students which we have been working on this year was at the centre of this work. Teachers planned some great ideas on the day to incorporate into their teaching.
